Manufacturing in the North

Northern manufacturers must overcome many obstacles in order to succeed. High costs for labour, freight and fuel cut deeply into profit margins. Recognizing that imported products are expensive and often less suitable for northern conditions, manufacturers are turning obstacles into opportunities. The successful formula is simple - address a local need and supply a quality product, preferably with added value.

David Borud, a member of the Yukon Home Builders' Association in Whitehorse, has followed that advice. He saw a need for windows designed for the northern environment. He now produces and markets windows that stand up to the rigorous climate. He's already identified a new opportunity - a window sill that outperforms traditional designs.

Other manufacturing successes include batteries, boats, parkas, wood products, jewelry and native crafts.
