| STEPS UP stands for: Skills Training, Educating People, Simplifying Upward Progression. Prospects for the program will be evaluated based on their physical and mental capabilities, as to whether they are able to graduate from the program and become productive members of society once again. Physical and mental handicaps do not necessarily implicate rejection from participating in the program, however must be taken into consideration prior to acceptance in the program. We have seen both physically and mentally handicapped people work and be productive members of society. The greatest handicap is unwillingness to change the conditions which placed them into homelessness to begin with. Each program member, once accepted into the program, will be expected to go through a 1 year program, during which their food, shelter, and clothing will be provided. This full year will give them the time they need to become acclimated with the working world once again, as well as conquer any personal, social, or legal problems they may have. During the first 3 months of a member's stay at our facilities, the members undergo counseling and assistance relating to self esteem & confidence issues, requirements for upward progression ( Desire, Dignity, Determination, Destination, and Dedication). They are taught certain moral axioms related to Personal Character and Ethics. Classes in personal interaction, anger management, harassment, tolerance, and substance abuse, among other subjects, will be covered during this time. During the last 9 months of a member's stay, they will be trained in one of several job skill fields according to their individual aptitude and experience. Skills fields will include such job skills as carpentry, plumbing, house painting, electrical work, sales, security guard, etc. Emphasis will also be placed on the versatility of an individual, as if a person loses his job, he may have to change job fields and try something completely new to continue on with his goals in life. cheap hotel in Lagos Also during the last 9 months, program members may participate in an internal program creating products or services for sale, or for use within the program, any proceeds of which will go back into the program. Example: Painters may paint buildings owned by STEPS UP. Mechanics may work on STEPS UP vehicles. Carpenters may build chairs or other goods, which may be used by the program, or sold at charity auction for proceeds which go back into the program. Fundraisers may go from business to business, performing fund raising for the program. Managers and Administrators may be utilized within the program according to their expertise and experience. They will also be assisted in job counseling, resume writing, finding leads, and otherwise finding work within that job field, and expected to donate a certain portion of their income back into the program. They will undergo financial counseling, stressing their responsibilities to the community. Rent may be expected of them, depending on their circumstances. This will instill important discretion and judgement, putting them into a routine of paying scheduled bills. For safety, security, and insurance reasons, at no time will illegal (non prescribed) drugs or alcohol be permitted on the property, or any other illegal activity. Each member will be afforded the opportunity to explore personal, social, and religious growth outside the program.
