The Hart Taylor Special Care Center

Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia cause physical changes in the brain which cause problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It's estimated that 10% of those over 65 may have Alzheimer's disease, and with people over 85, 50 % may have it. In 1984 Kirkhaven established the very first specialized dementia care unit in Rochester. Our staff has extensive training and experience in caring for those with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias; caring for them with the dignity and respect they're entitled to. This 34 bed unit on our fifth floor is devoted to creating a safe environment where special needs are accommodated. Often, what has long been familiar, becomes strange to someone with Alzheimer's. This can lead to resistive or difficult behaviors. So, our staff keeps the resident's routine basic and repetitive; verbal requests are kept simple in order to reduce frustration. At the same time, our staff exhibits a loving acceptance and validation of who these residents are at this stage of their life. If you have any questions regarding The Hart Taylor Special Care Center please call Lois Maltman in our Admissions office at 461-1991, ext. 3010.
