At Kirkhaven we understand that and we go the extra mile to help make the experience as positive as possible for all concerned. At Kirkhaven, your loved one will receive 24-hour nursing care, as part of an individualized care plan. One of our staff physicians is on-site on weekdays and on call during the night and weekends. In addition, we make living at Kirkhaven as medically convenient as possible: prescription drugs, routine dental care, podiatry services, psychiatric consultations, vision care maintenance, ear-nose-throat care, and speech therapy are all easily made available as necessary and prescribed by your primary physician. We encourage our long-term care residents to be as active and independent as possible. Residents can take part in a wide variety of recreational activities on-site: music, creative arts, discussion groups, gardening, exercise, cooking, films, holiday parties and other social events. Residents may reserve one of our visiting rooms to entertain a number of guests. Outings and overnight visits to family and friends can also be scheduled, along with trips to cultural events. We admit not only a resident but his or her whole family. We strongly believe that our residents should maintain a natural ongoing contact with family and friends - it enriches the resident's life and the lives of family and friends! Our name itself reflects our commitment. "Kirk" is the Scottish word for church and the concept of "church haven" is one that embodies the sense of community we attempt to provide for the men and women who live here. It's a community where families are encouraged to participate in their loved one's care. Whenever possible, each long term resident will be cared for by the same nurse and nursing assistants on a regular basis. This creates a close, friendly relationship. Residents appreciate the stability and familiarity, while staff gets to know the individual likes and needs. Elder care has changed and consumers have more options than ever before. We are finding that our role is changing as well. While various units serve different populations one of our niches is in caring for the very frail. While home care, adult homes and some other nursing homes may specialize in the more well elderly, our population tends to be more acute. Our house wide acuity rating is currently at 1.10 which is one of the higher case mix ratings for nursing homes in this area.
